Bavuma falls short of ton as Bangladesh chip away

Recommended Posts

Temba Bavuma fell seven short of his second Test hundred, as Bangladesh chipped away at South Africa's batting order by taking wickets at regular intervals in the morning session of Day 2 of the Durban Test. The hosts were 314/8 when lunch was taken.

South Africa had started the morning session on a confident note against the second new ball, with Bavuma glancing one off Khaled Ahmed through fine leg. However, Khaled trapped Bavuma's batting partner - Kyle Verreynne - in front with the wicketkeeper-batter getting stuck in the crease. The 'keeper-batter took the review but to no avail. The very next ball, the pace bowler removed Wiaan Mulder, with the all-rounder edging one to the fielder stationed at gully.

Bangladesh also reviewed for an LBW decision against Bavuma but the ball-tracker showed it to be clipping the top of leg-stump and the on-field decision stayed. Slowly but steadily, Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj began to add crucial runs. Bavuma, however, could have been dismissed in the 92nd over when Ebadot Hossain forced him to edge one to Yasir Ali at second slip but the chance was put down.

Bavuma then began to play with more authority and cracked a couple of fluent drives. Eventually, Mehidy Hasan cleaned up Bavuma, with the experienced batter not being able to essay the cut shot. Ebadot followed it up by snuffing out Maharaj, with the lower order batter castled by a nip-backer. Lizaad Williams, who took a review to overturn an LBW decision, was batting alongside Simon Harmer at the break.

Khaled continued to be the best bowler on show for the visitors and has three wickets for his efforts. Ebadot and Mehidy have two scalps each so far.

Brief Scores: South Africa 314/8 (Temba Bavuma 93; Khaled Ahmed 3-80) vs Bangladesh.
