Will Smith Returns For I Am Legend Sequel, And He Already Has An A-List Co-Star

Recommended Posts

Following his Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated success in The Pursuit of Happyness, 2007 saw Will Smith star in I Am Legend, the third film adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel of the same name. Considered a critical and commercial success, for years there was talk of Smith reprising the role of Dr. Robert Neville in a prequel, but nothing ever came of it. However, today we learn that Smith is now returning for a sequel to I Am Legend, and he will star alongside Michael B. Jordan.

No plot details have yet been revealed for I Am Legend 2, or who Michael B. Jordan will be playing. That said, in addition to sharing screen time with Will Smith, Deadline shared that Jordan will also executive produce the sequel alongside his co-star. Akiva Goldsman, who wrote I Am Legend, is returning to write and executive produce the sequel, but a director has yet to be hired. Francis Lawrence, who directed the last three Hunger Games films, helmed the original film
and said in 2018 that a sequel was not necessary
Shortly after this news broke, Will Smith teasingly confirmed that he and Michael B. Jordan will be working together on the sequel to I Am Legend with the Instagram post below.
It is curious that Warner Bros. Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to I Am Legend starring Will Smith given that in the first film (spoiler warning) Robert Neville activated a grenade which knocked him out and the Darkseekers attacked him so that Anna Alice Braga's Montez and Charlie Tahan's Ethan could escape with the Darkseeker Cure he had just created. The two ended up in an army-run survivor camp to deliver this cure, and thanks to Robert's sacrifice, it became, you guessed it, legend. Unless we see Neville through flashbacks or hallucination/dream sequences, it's hard to imagine a plausible way Smith's character is still alive
It should be noted that I Am Legend has an alternate ending where Robert Neville survived and made it to the survivors' camp with Anna and Ethan, but never created a cure. Instead, he had come to realize that the infected populace saw him as a monster. It's possible that I Am Legend 2 will follow the events of the alternate ending, but that will confuse people who saw the first film in theaters and never saw this alternate version of the story's conclusion. However, this will not be the first sequel distributed by Warner Bros. which will arrive long after its predecessor which features a character thought to be dead, as The Matrix Resurrections brought Keanu Reeves' Neo back into the picture.Obviously, there are a lot of questions to be answered regarding the sequel to I Am Legend, but at least this project offers an opportunity for Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan to finally work together. This big news comes a few months after Smith played Richard Williams in King Richard, and he was later recognized in the Best Actor category during the 2022 Oscar nominations. Jordan gained attention last year primarily for starring in Without Remorse and A Journal for Jordan, as well as vocally covering Killmonger for two episodes of the animated What If…? series and cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

With I Am Legend 2, Will Smith is directing the action thriller Emancipation directed by Antoine Fuqua, while Michael B. Jordan is starring and making his directorial debut with Creed III, as well as producing the film Static Shock and the HBO Max series. on the Val-Zod incarnation of Superman. If you're in the mood to rewatch I Am Legend, it's available to stream on Tubi.
