Third Poirot Movie Will Be Majorly Different From Death on the Nile

The next entry in the Hercule Poirot series will be a different genre and tone than Death on the Nile, says the head of 20th Century Studios. Created by Agatha Christie and introduced in the 1920 novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Hercule Poirot is described as one of the world's greatest detectives. He is one of the most prevalent characters in mystery literature and has appeared in 33 novels and more than 50 short stories published between 1920 and 1975.

The character has appeared in a number of film adaptations, and in 2017 director Kenneth Branagh directed a fresh take on Murder on the Orient Express, in which he also played Poirot. The film was a box office hit and grossed $352.8 million worldwide against a budget of $55 million. A sequel was greenlit, Death on the Nile, which after many delays due to COVID-19 was finally released in theaters on February 11, 2022. It also received positive reviews from critics, indicating that 20th Century Studios had another strong franchise on its hands.

Indeed, it appears the Poirot franchise is far from done. In an interview with THR, 20th Century Pictures President Steve Asbell said that screenwriter Michael Green is working on a script for a third Poirot film and that it will be a shift in genre and tone from both Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Asbell did say that Branagh would return to direct and star in the film.

There are a number of stories that can be adapted into the Poriot franchise, like Five Little Pigs, which is often regarded as one of the best books Christie wrote and sees Poirot investigate a murder from sixteen years prior. However, given the story is so well known, the studio may look towards lesser-known stories or even the short stories for the next entry, especially with Green implying the next movie will be based on a more obscure story. Branagh had previously mentioned he wanted to do a crossover film with Miss Marple, another Agatha Christie character.

News of a third Poirot film does come as a bit of a shock, as Death on the Nile has not performed as well at the box office as its predecessor. Currently, Death on the Nile has grossed $33 domestically and $102 million worldwide against a budget of $90 million. However, 20th Century Studios seems to be putting more and more focus on streaming films, so a third entry could always be a Hulu Original film.
